Fort Pendlestone is a refined Grade II listed sandstone building with a captivating history, having been used for a variety of purposes including a corn mill, forge and textile mill.
It was built by an eccentric mill owner in the 19th century, the gothic style mill containing a cast iron frame and remarkable brick jack arches.
The building is now a luxurious residential development.
The earliest record of the mill is in 1227 and it was given to the town by Henry III and was run by the Whitmore family who owned the Apley estate at the time.
The sandstone used for the construction of the mill was cut from the rock on the hillside adjacent on Bridgnorth Road.
The last use was in the early 1930's when the building was bought by the Co-operative Wholesale Society and was used as a milk exchanged right up until the early 1960's.
Fort Pendlestone occupies a prominent position on the banks of the River Severn, just over a mile outside of the market town of Bridgnorth which can be reached on foot (from the development) via the path along the river.
Bridgnorth, in reality, is two towns: the High Town and the Low Town. Now connected by the steepest inland funicular railway in Britain.
The Low Town was once a thriving port along the banks of the River Severn, while the High Town held the castle, the churches, and many fine 16th and 17th century mansions. Charles I, lost his head here completely, declaring the view to be - \"the finest in all my kingdom.\"
The more energetic amongst you can amble up one of the seven sets of steps, or the steep old Cartway, where goods were once hauled to the market above. The carts are gone, but the markets remain. Antiques and local produce are particular specialities.
Nearby an iron footbridge takes you to the Severn Valley Railway Station. If you want to explore the beautiful Severn Gorge to the south, and you can enjoy wonderful 1940's and 1960's steam nostalgia weekends.
