Otterton is a popular village in the heart of east devon. With excellent transport links into the larger towns of Sidmouth, Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton it is ideal for commuters who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the village. There is a popular primary school (rated \"good\" on last Ofstead inspection), village pub with beer garden and Otterton Mill is close by for the essentials.
Otterton was certainly a thriving centre when it was in its heyday. The village has evolved over the past 1,300 years. The Saxons first settled here and by the time the Normans arrived Otterton was the largest settlement in the South East of Devon. Yes â Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Exmouth and Topsham were virtually non-existent! But Otterton Mill was already in operation. At that time the river Otter had a large open estuary with direct access to the sea and in fact Otterton was a port! The area has an interesting history to explore during your stay, including places like the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh (born in 1552 just near East Budleigh) at Hayes Barton but there are also many present day attractions in the area for both young and old. Otterton has a wonderful working mill and you can buy fresh baked bread from the flour milled there and other local produce.
