DESCRIPTION
The new house will be situated in the former grounds of The Manor House, Newton Harcourt, in a wonderfully private wooded area some distance away and visually independent of the existing house, with independent and private access via a new entrance from Wistow Road. Planning permission has been granted under the former Planning Policy Statement 7, now part of Paragraph 55, of the National Planning Policy Framework, which encourages architects to push the boundaries of their profession and create something truly outstanding and which calls for an innovative and exceptional design that contributes to protecting and enhancing the environment, and to help raise standards of design in rural areas. The approval has been granted on behalf of Mr and Mrs Anthony Goddard; the Goddard family have been responsible over 6 generations for a significant number of iconic designed buildings both locally, including Joseph Goddard's Clock Tower in the centre of Leicester and in London where they were responsible for the first warehouse to change to residential use - Oliver's Wharf in Wapping as well as further Dockland's schemes. Anthony's design of the house is in part derived from the traditional Elizabethan H plan of the Manor House and will consist of a central hall surrounded by four rooms, which form the base at ground floor level of four towers. The accommodation extends vertically in a stepped pattern, with a turret and terrace at the top of each tower, rising from 2 to 5 stories. The towers are timber clad with timber windows whilst the central hall will be glazed. This arrangement keeps the footprint to a minimum so maintains the maximum amount of woodland and responds to the adjacent trees through its height and transparency. The house, in keeping with all the buildings in the area, will be viewed in glimpses, with 3 new axis formed to connect the building with the adjacent countryside; the main visual link will be to Wistow Church with another to the High Bridge on the Grand Union Canal and a third via the vehicular entrance on Wistow Road.
TECHNOLOGIES
The house will embrace the latest technologies in an effort to achieve the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6. It is planned to include air to water heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, grey water harvesting and the possibility of an earth energy bank for longer term heat storage.
