The house retains many period features including different decorative cornices, many beautiful fireplaces and panelling. The house is built of stone with a slate roof and the south facing elevation has been harled. There are lovely views west to the Dunnichen Hill. (A planning application for a four car garage has been made) The original house was built by John Baxter and his son Hendry. The Baxters ran the international textile company, based in Dundee, and also co-founded the Dundee Commercial Banking company. In 1865 Henry Baxters daughters sold the house and estate to John Clerk Brodie ws., a descendant of the Brodies of Brodie. He was a jp, Deputy Lieutenant of Forfarshire, Keeper of the General Register of Sasines, and for a time Crown Agent for Scotland. The stained glass window on the landing displays the crest of both himself and his wife. Idvies remained in the possession of John Brodies descendants until 1983 when the house and grounds were converted into and ran as a hotel for approximately 20 years. In 2003 the house was divided and the larger portion of the property and grounds was sold to the current owners who have returned the house to use as a family home.
