About the Area - *
About the area: Wedmore has been an important village since Saxon times. This can be seen in the attractive architecture, which combines cottages and grand houses from the Georgian and Victorian periods, with a number of fine historic buildings such as the medieval church and 16th century coaching inn. It is also reflected in an extensive range of clothing, food and other interesting shops including a delicatessen, fishmongers and organic butchers, as well as a chemist, post office, bank and general store, plus pubs, restaurants and tearooms. There is a wide range of cultural and sporting clubs and societies, e.g. swimming pools at both Cheddar and Wells, sailing and windsurfing clubs at Cheddar Reservoir, the Badgworth Equestrian Centre, Wedmores 18 hole golf course, floodlit astroturf tennis courts, indoor and outdoor bowling greens, football and cricket grounds, plus a theatre club and the well-regarded Wedmore Opera. The Cathedral City of Wells is approximately 8 miles away and also provides a good range of business, recreational and shopping facilities. City shopping centres are available at Taunton, Bath and Bristol (each approximately 25 miles away). Communications in the area are good with access to the M5 (J22 - 10 minutes) connecting to the M4 (J16). A local train service from Highbridge (9 miles) links with the intercity train services at Taunton and Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington, taking approximately 1.30 hours. Bristol International Airport is 16 miles away. There are excellent state and independent schools in the area including Wedmore First School, Hugh Sexeys Middle School which has an Outstanding Ofsted rating, and the high performing Kings of Wessex Academy. Independent schools include Wells Cathedral School, Sidcot, Millfield, Taunton School, King's Bruton, All Hallows and Downside.
Historic Notes - **
Historic note: Tonkin House was built in 1830 by John Tonkin, a prosperous Methodist businessman from St. Ives who started the brickworks in Wedmore. He built the large emporium next door in addition to this dwelling house using \"Tonkin\" bricks and \"fish-tail\" tiles especially designed and made in his brickworks.
Accommodation - ***
Tonkin House is in the heart of the village with easy access to all the amenities. It dates from the late Georgian period and retains many original details including ornate cornices and ceiling roses, working window shutters, marble and cast iron fireplaces, and a particularly fine staircase and balustrade above the galleried dining hall. These features are complemented by works in recent years which have included re-wiring, re-plumbing and the installation of oak flooring in various rooms plus a new kitchen and bathrooms. Whilst the house retains its charm and character it is nonetheless an extremely comfortable and livable family home with gas central heating with period style radiators. The front door opens into a wide reception hall with doors to the drawing room and sitting room. Both of these fine rooms have large bay windows (with shutters) and each has a marble fireplace. The reception hall continues through into a large dining room which has a magnificent flying staircase and gallery with an ornate balustrade. Next to the dining room is the 23'5'' kitchen & breakfast room being light and airy benefitting from a dual aspect and French doors to the garden. The kitchen area is neatly and discreetly furnished and appointed and includes cupboards, granite worktops, a double Belfast sink, an integral dishwasher, a concealed fridge/larder and a large gas range cooker. Leading off the dining room is a utility room and a cloakroom.
- ****
The gallery on the first floor looks down onto the dining room and leads to the master bedroom which has an ensuite bathroom. Also on this level are the family bathroom, a cloakroom and 3 other bedrooms - one of which has an en suite shower room. There are also 2 other bedrooms on the second floor - each being approached by its own staircase. In all, upstairs, 6 bedrooms, 3 bath/shower rooms, and a loo.
Outside
Outside The house is in the centre of the village and stands back behind a low stonewall with cast iron railings and a pathway to the entrance. At the rear of the house is a large, mainly walled garden which has also been the subject of considerable works and improvement in recent years. It incorporates a lawn, an ornamental pond, well stocked flower and shrub beds, walkways and terraces together with mature trees. At the end of the garden is a doorway to a shared rear drive, the double garage, store and parking area.
