EAST LEIGH is a small pretty hamlet which lies about 2 miles from the main A377 Exeter to Barnstaple road, a lovely unspoilt part of the country surrounded by rolling Devonshire farmland. Crediton is about 9 miles away, providing a full range of facilities including a supermarket, secondary education, leisure centre and railway station. The cathedral city of Exeter is 8 miles further on with all major facilities and access to the motorway network. The nearest railway station is about 4 miles away. The larger village of Zeal Monachorum is a parish and village situated nearby. Approximately 500ft above sea level the village is sited on a south facing slope. It comprises many old properties of character and charm (several of the thatched cottages being subject to preservation orders), and the modern properties have been integrated with care and in an unobtrusive manner. The name of village is derived from the latin `Cella Monachorum' (the cell of the Monks), and part of the Parish Church which is the third building to stand on the present site was a cell of the Benedictine Abbey from Buckfast from 1016 when Canute bestowed on the Abbot of the manor of Zeal Monachorum. There is the Waie Inn which offers excellent facilities including swimming pool, squash courts and snooker room etc. The village is in a peaceful setting well away from any main roads yet it is convenient for commuting to Crediton and Exeter.
