The house is approached from a narrow public road, through a pair of iron drive gates on granite pillars and a tarmac drive between clipped beech hedges to a parking and turning area outside the house. The house contains a number of well-proportioned rooms, a number of which enjoy views over the gardens and grounds and to the countryside beyond. There is also the benefit of a detached cottage, The Cider Barn, providing a useful ancillary income as holiday letting. |
. | Surrounding the house are lawns, rhododendrons and other varieties of trees and shrubs including pyracanthas against the house wall, raised vegetable beds, log stores outside the rear entrance and space for parking. There is a stream-fed pond fringed by water loving plants, including lilies and irises and is a haven for wildlife. A path, with a mass of bluebells in the spring, leads down to the river, which is tidal. Beside it is a decked balcony overlooking the river and known as the quay, with a sheltered barbecue area and boat-launching spot. The vendors have in the past moored their boat at the quay and have explored and rivers and inlets at high tide. There are fishing rights on the river, which contains salmon and otters and is visited by kingfishers. Beside the river is a designated Site of Scientific Interest. |

History | It is understood that, after the Norman Conquest, the land surrounding Morvah was given to William the Conqueror‘s half brother, the Count of Mortain. In 1920, Morvah was owned by the Lord of Tredinnick and in the 17th century by Sir Walter Moyle. It is not known when exactly the house was built, but it has evolved over the years into a substantial house with Georgian undertones and solid stone walls under a slate roof. |
Location | The nearby village of Landrake is about a mile away and offers everyday facilities, including a Post Office/general store, church, inn and primary school. The nearby hamlet of Tideford has an excellent inn, the Rod & Line, with an extensive seafood menu, local ales and occasional live music evenings, the Heskyn Mill restaurant and a butcher‘s shop. There are schools at the nearby village of Landrake and St Germans. The historic naval city of Plymouth, about 9 miles away, offers extensive recreational, cultural and educational facilities, including the Maritime Museum. Directions | From Plymouth on the A38 go over the Tamar Bridge and under the tunnel up to Carkeel roundabout on the A38. Cross straight over aand continue along the A38 passing through the village of Landrake. After leaving the village you will start going down a gentle hill to the valley bottom where you will then start to rise up the other side. Upon levelling out and gently bearing left there will be a telephone exchange on your right. Within a few hundred yards as you come to the brow of the hill leading down towards Tideford turn left onto the Parish road which within a few hundred yards the entrance driveway to Morvah is found on your right hand side. |
