As well as several award winning independent shops, Pangbourne has excellent schools, both in the private and the state sector, a large modern Health and Medical Centre, riverside pubs and restaurants. There are excellent sporting and leisure facilities and an active community with its own village magazine, and many societies and associations. There are many country and riverside walks, with public footpaths and bridle ways giving access to miles of open countryside and the beautiful beech woods of the Chiltern Hills.
Goring
The villages of Goring and Streatley, on opposite sides of the river, are within an area of outstanding natural beauty and offer many amenities as a residential, tourist and recreational centre. The village has been awarded South Of England Village of the Year. The Goring gap is an interesting geological feature that allows the river Thames to break through the hills and make its way to the sea east of London. The river runs from North to South dividing the Berkshire Downs from the Chilterns. In addition to attractive riverside scenery, the Goring Gap is convenient for many places of interest, including Oxford, and the Cotswolds and London is less than an hour away by train. The Goring Gap is also at the junction of the Ridgeway and Thames long-distance Paths and so popular with walkers. Goring, with a resident population of 3500, is served by a range of excellent shops, hotels, restaurants, pubs and a highly sought after primary school. Its rail link allows many people to work in London (56 minutes) Reading (15 minutes) or other towns and yet still enjoy the pleasures of living in the country. The village has its own website with links to many village activities and businesses.
