Living in Bamber BridgeQuality of life is about the details of everyday living. From the little things, like knowing the nearest place to pick up a pint of milk, to more important matters like finding the right school or having a health centre nearby, you need to know that the community you’re moving to will support you and your family, as well as be a pleasant place to live. So here’s some useful information about the area around Gate House Fold.
TransportThe Bamber Bridge railway station offers services, approximately hourly, to Preston, St Annes, Blackpool South, Blackburn, Accrington and Burnley, with one daily direct train to Bradford, Leeds and York. More services can be accessed at Preston, less than ten minutes away. The village is also linked with Preston via National Cycle Route 55. Gate House Fold is around a mile from the M61 and M65 motorways, and just minutes from the M6. There are bus services from the town centre into Preston, Bolton and Wigan.
Village LifeBamber Bridge, known as ‘The Brig’ to the local residents or ‘Briggers’, became prosperous in the eighteenth century through calico printing and grew into a centre of linen manufacturing, giving rise in the process to some fine Victorian architecture. The canal that once played an important commercial role is used by pleasure craft nowadays, while the traditional village ambience is reflected in the award-winning Hospital Inn, just a few yards from Gate House Fold and recently restored with a cosy bar and a candle-lit dining area. Bamber Bridge library is the focal point for a range of activities from council surgeries to children’s story times.
ShoppingStation Road, in the village centre, offers a wide variety of local services and retailers, from the independent butchers and bakers to newsagents, fast food takeaways and off licences, a post office, convenience stores and a pharmacist. The Capitol Centre in Walton-le-Dale includes a wide choice of high street names and there are two supermarkets in the village.
Education and HealthThe day nursery in Kellet Lane is just a few minutes walk from Gate House Fold, and nearby schools include the C of E Primary St Aiden’s and the rc Primary Brownedge St Mary’s, which has an associated High School. Other high schools can be found in the surrounding villages and in Preston. There are three full-time medical centres and two dental surgeries in the village.
Leisure and RecreationAround ten minutes walk from Gate House Fold, Bamber Bridge Leisure Centre offers swimming, sports and fitness facilities within the lovely surroundings of Withy Park, where the meadows are complemented by a children’s play area. Cuerden Valley Park, 650 acres of woodlands and riverside walks, is just to the south of the village, and there is a seven-screen Vue cinema and a bowling alley in Walton-le-Dale, three miles away.
