Barugh House, Great Barugh, Malton YO17 6UZ
Barugh House is a village house of classical Georgian proportions and façade, with a later, Victorian addition at the rear. As well as providing additional space, this has the benefit of creating a rear service corridor and wide first floor landing in between the two rear wings, as well as that most distinguished feature, a secondary staircase.
The house was built in the late 18th century and enjoys an elevated position in the village with far-reaching views. To some it may seem strange that the Vale of Pickering offers undulating country, since the perception is often of a flat plain between the Howardian Hills and North York Moors. But barugh (pronounced “barf”) means rising ground, and there is indeed a perceptible incline in the village, with Barugh House sitting almost at the highest point. Notable features include:
• double front doors to hallway with dentilled cornice
• panelled doors, period fireplaces and working shutters
• distinguished south facing drawing room with two sets of sash windows
• separate dining room with lincrusta decoration and access to kitchen
• kitchen with Aga and handmade units
• rear service hallway and secondary staircase
• main staircase with delicate turned spindles and polished rail
• long beautifully maintained garden and useful outbuildings
• easy access major centres including rail connection at Malton
Outside
The front of the house is distinguished by a knot garden of clipped box behind a mellow brick wall with stone copings, and a privet hedge. The stone elevations support Virginia creeper, cotoneaster and rambler roses. To the east side of the house is a parking area, while the main outbuildings lie to the west and include garaging, garden store and log shed.
The garden with its shaped lawns and varied levels is home to cedrus atlantica glauca, flowering cherry, Scots pine and productive fruit trees. Herbaceous borders provide year-round colour; there is a vegetable garden and soft fruit area, with greenhouse and potting shed. A timber gate leads from a railed flagged terrace with a small pond under a spreading copper beech, and a group of stately oaks at the far end of the garden break up distant views over undulating countryside to the Moors beyond.
Environs
Great Barugh is handily placed for a number of market towns: Pickering, Malton and Kirkbymoorside are all within a few minutes, and there is a rail connection at Malton to the East Coast mainline. There is a thriving pub in the village and schools, both state and private, nearby. The countryside around is undulating agricultural land, affording expansive views.
