Full Details for 4 Bedroom Property for sale in Swindon, SN4 :

This beautiful old farmhouse originated in the 18th Century, was remodelled in the 19th Century and over the last twenty years has been enhanced and updated by the present owners to a very high standard. Its history has dictated its construction of stone and brick and the somewhat unusual layout, gives it great character and charm. The sympathetic restoration has retained most of the original period features or had period replacements where necessary. There are five reception rooms to the ground floor, including a 24' family/sun/garden room across the rear of the property with views over the patio and down into the garden. All rooms, in our opinion, are a good size, with working period fireplaces and suspended wooden floors. The well-appointed country style kitchen leads from the breakfast room to a utility area and downstairs shower room and WC. Upstairs offers a spacious landing with dual aspect windows, three good size double bedrooms plus a fourth double room currently used as a study/office and a family bathroom. Externally, the beautifully landscaped gardens lead down to a very functional workspace that can be used as a workshop or office with power and light and two other storage sheds. The garden design is low maintenance, but interesting and flexible for all family requirements.

Property History

The original stone cottage was built around 1790, probably as a farm workers dwelling. It was then two rooms up and down with an outhouse and scullery. The walls in this part of the house are about 2 feet thick. The road must then have been at a slightly different angle as the house does not align to the others in the neighbourhood.During the mid 19th century the estates were sold to a local land owner believed to be a wool merchant and the house was converted into a working farm and extended to the size it is now. Architectural salvage isnt new and the house was extended using fittings and materials from elsewhere, evidenced by the things that did not quite fit their new surroundings. In the 1920s the farm was sold to the County Council and was operated as a working farm and dairy by the tenant, a milk round was operated from the farm until the mid 1950s. The block built shed at the bottom of the garden are the remnants of the milking parlour. The apple trees in the garden are well over 100 years old and are from the original orchard, some of which can be seen in other apple and pear trees of the period in adjoining gardens. The land was sold off by the Council when it ceased to be a working farm probably in the 1960s, and the house and remaining gardens were sold into private hands in the 1980s.The house next door was built on the stable block and the playing field to the rear contained the hay barn. The Lister estate to the rear was built on some of the meadowland.
