History
The farm had a connection to the Rebecca Riots which took place between 1839-1843 in rural parts of Wales. There were a series of protests made by tenant farms against the payment of tolls charged to use the roads. Turnpike trusts or groups of businessmen owned most of the main roads and indeed fixed the charges and decided how many toll gates could be built. During the riots, men disguised as women attacked the toll gates, becoming famously known as ‘Rebecca and their Daughters‘.
Tolls were a big expense for rural farmers who used the roads to take their crops and animals to the market and also to collect lime to dress the land; it would cost as much as five shillings (25p) in tolls to move a cart of lime eight miles inland.
The cottage at Cwmcile was the original farmhouse and dates back about 300 years, where during the Rebecca Riots captain john Napier arrested the Morgan Brothers for their part in damaging the toll gates.
The present owners family have resided at Cwmcile since 1850.

From M4 motorway Junction 46, off roundabout take the A48 towards Morriston then immediately take first left at mini roundabout signposted Morriston Hospital. Proceed until next roundabout straight across take first left onto Rhydypandy road. Continue until reaching the Masons Arms take first left and proceed for about 0.9 of a mile, brick built bus shelter on the left hand side, turn immediately right and sharp left onto single track road. Pass through Rhosfawr Farm and continue straight on until reaching Cwmcile.
