Tucked away at the end of a private road in the heart of the peaceful village of Shaw is Number 63a Shaw Hill, an attractive property that has been a much loved family home for the past thirty-nine years.“When we bought the house in 1976 it was fairly newly built,” says Eva. “We liked the location because the primary school is just a stroll away, there’s a nice church, a friendly pub and a wide choice of secondary schools within easy reach.” “We also like the fact that the house was a good size,” says John, “and because it’s at the end of a private, no-through road, it was also very quiet and safe for the children.”“The house was only a few years old, but the décor was not at all to our taste,” says Eva. “There was a lot of dark wood, a huge stone fireplace, so despite all the rooms being generously proportioned it felt very dark. Over the years we’ve done a great deal to make it feel much brighter and lighter. We put in glass-panelled doors, ripped out the unsightly fireplace, added an extension and new windows. There’s now a wonderful sense of space, and the sunlight floods in from morning to early evening.”“I think my favourite part of the house is the lounge which flows through double doors into the dining room,” says Eva. “The two spaces can be opened up to each other, and then there is a sliding patio door from the dining room straight out to the garden. It’s a wonderful space to entertain in. I quite like just sitting at the dining room table and taking in the lovely view of the garden, which is an absolute haven for birds.”“The house was built on what used to be the orchard of the former Beltane House,” says John, “so we have the lovely old stone wall running along the back of the garden and a few old apple and pear trees, from which we get a very good crop.” “We’ve had the garden landscaped,” says Eva, “but it was mainly laid to lawn so that the children had space to play and have a good game of football. It feels very secluded and during the summer months it’s a real sun trap.”“Shaw has been a lovely place to live,” continues Eva. “the new garden centre with its farm shop and restaurant is a real asset. There’s also a good sense of community and lots to get involved in.” “It’s also a very convenient place to live with Bath, which has everything, only 10 miles away” says John, “easy access to the M4 and M5, and a fast main line railway connection from Chippenham for commuting or leisure trips into London.”“We’ve lived here a long time,” says Eva, “and loved every minute of it, but this house needs another family to enjoy it. It has been a real haven for us and one we will be sad to leave.”
