Location | The Rousdon Estate is situated on the East Devon Coastline approximately 3 miles from the Dorset border and the coastal town of Lyme Regis. The location is one of the most beautiful unspoilt locations on the Dorset/Devon coastline and awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2001. The estate extends to some 350 acres and comprises of parkland with mature trees, farmland and extensive areas of woodland. From the estate there is access to a private beach called Charlton Beach. |
Estate History | The estate was built in the late 19th century and was built as a large mansion house (now grade II* listed) with estate buildings, church, lodges, walled garden, driveways and grounds. The whole estate lies within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In 1870 Sir Henry Peek, MP for Wimbledon, purchased the village of Rousdon. He had been engaged in the tea trade and commissioned Sir Ernest George to design a Mansion and other service buildings to take advantage of the excellent position some 150m above sea level. Being some distance from the nearest town, the mansion had to be self sufficient with many further buildings built to house the several hundred people then engaged servicing the estate. These people would have included those working in the mansion, looking after the grounds, farmers, carpenters, stable staff etc. The Estate was sold by the Peek family in 1930 to Allhallows School and then acquired by Rousdon Estate limited in 1999 when the school closed. |
. | The Mansion and Estate buildings have now been converted in residential properties. The properties are used both as permanent residences and holiday homes. |
