St Michael's is a beautiful Medieval church, sympathetically converted into a lovely, unique home with many original features. Situated within a stunning rural location, within a conservation area in South Lanarkshire, Scotland; only 11 miles from the M6 and within commuting distance of both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Converted into a detached house, all on one level, in 2007. Attractive arched timber double-doors lead into a Victorian tiled entrance porch with a 12th century roundel set into the window-sill. Another arched timber door takes you into the large open plan kitchen/dining room with solid beech units, granite worktops and a Rangemaster double-oven stove. The property has four double bedrooms, three of which have large built-in double wardrobes, and the master bedroom has an attractive en-suite shower room and secondary glazing. There is also a large family bathroom with a freestanding-bath and a utility room plumbed for a washing/drying machine. There is a wonderful stained glass window and three large Medieval Windows, letting in lots of natural light (in the sitting-room, master bedroom and bedroom two/study; all South facing). There are partially timber-panelled walls, vaulted wooden ceilings and beautiful, arched leaded-light windows throughout.
There is a large garden area off to the side of the property and ample off-road parking to the front and side. Plenty of space is available for extra rooms to be built above the present living accommodation and in the large attic space (subject to the appropriate planning approval).
The property benefits from oil-fired central heating and mains electricity. All carpets are included in the sale.
Set into the North side of the church, one can see an old Medieval doorway (now filled-in) containing an original coat-of-arms (this is to the right of the present entrance), and another, smaller coat of arms set into the East end of the church. There are also two wonderful Medieval arched stone recesses in the sitting-room, which would look wonderful opened-up as features to show more of the original character of the property. From the main rooms in the church one can see Tinto Hill and Quathquan, an ancient Roman hillfort. Around the church is a beautifully maintained historic graveyard (no-longer used) but immaculately looked after by the local council.
This church has a really lovely atmosphere, is very peaceful and has no ghosts! From the front door, you can see two historic monuments, the old ruined castle and the dovecote which date back to the 12th century. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and yet you are only 5 1/2 miles from Biggar, 9 miles from Lanark and about three quarters of an hour from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Peebles. It is also only 11 miles from the M6. Biggar, a historic market town, contains many unique and good-quality shops, plus everything one needs for life in a rural area, such as a post office, supermarket, butchers, bakers, grocers, delicatessens, newsagents, hardware shop, public houses, petrol station etc.
