Historical Notes - Batheaston Villa on Bailbrook Lane has a significant place in Bath society history. This large 18th century house, owned later by Sir John and Lady Miller, was famous for Lady Miller's weekly poetry contests in the 1770's (mentioned disparagingly in Horace Walpole's letters and attended by celebrities including Bath poet Christopher Anstey, the Duchess of Northumberland, the second Viscount Palmerston and Lord Carlisle). The custom was to offer an original verse to an Italian antique vase (excavated at Frascati in 1759). Lady Miller, the 'High Priestess', then crowned the winner with myrtle.
