The Village of Martin
This remote picturesque village lies at the head of the valley of the Allen River (a winterbourne) an area of outstanding natural beauty. The village street winds its way past old farms and small cottages up towards the old Roman road of the Downs. The Martin Down National Nature Reserve is an open area of chalk downland, heath and woodland. The down is rich in archaeology, dating from the Neolithic Bokerley Ditch to the Rifle Range used during the Second World War. Martin Church is a Grade I listed building and is tucked away behind the village street, while the Manor House (a Grade II listed building) forms an important visual stop on the bend of the street. There are many other listed buildings dating from 15th and 18th centuries. A group from Martin in Hampshire have formed a co-operative to try and produce as much of the daily diet as is possible from fields and barns within the parish boundary using the minimum of chemical inputs.
