Grappenhall | Grappenhall is a suburban village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is situated along the Bridgewater canal and forms one of the principal settlements of Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish. Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday book with the name Gropenhale and a valuation of five shillings. St Wilfreds Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120 although it was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family. |
Grappenhall Continued | Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs, The Parr Arms and the Rams Head, Grappenhall Hall Residential School (no longer a Residential School) and St Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre. The Casebook Of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. It is also the birthplace of the actor Tim Curry. The village name appears in the title of the song Grappenhall Rag, by the Darwen singer-songwriter Bryn Haworth. Grappenhall is home to the 25th Warrington East Scout Troup. There is also a cricket ground, which is the home of Grappenhall Cricket Club. |
Bridgewater Canal | The Bridgewater Canal was the forerunner of all manmade canals in that it was the first canal that was dug out on an entirely new course (i.e. Not following an existing river or water course) and it was constructed in the late 18th century. The Duke of Bridgewater financed the whole enterprise as he foresaw the benefits that he would gain from having a transport system that would enable him to move huge tonnages of coal from his coal mines at Worsley up to Manchester. The Duke engaged James Brindley to engineer his canal and he designed the route of the canal to follow contours and to be lock-free. The only complication to his route was the need to devise a stone aqueduct, one of the first on the whole canal system. The Bridgewater Canal continued to be used for the transportation of of heavy goods right up until the 1970's, despite competition from the railways. |
