SITUATION    The Parish of Lower Heyford lies beside the River Cherwell some twelve miles north of Oxford, about halfway between Oxford and Banbury. It includes the hamlet of Caulcott to house a population of just fewer than 400. From the time of the Canal's construction in 1790 it became a highway for goods travelling between two cities, with Heyford opening its own major Wharf. When the railway was built canal trade began to slow down. The highly picturesque Heyford Wharf is still a proper working boatyard and remains a firm favourite amongst tourists arriving to hire narrow boats for holidays and daytrips during the summer months. There is a village shop and Kizzies Bistro, and also The Bell Inn which is a 17th Century building and has been a public house since at least 1819.
