Marshalls are delighted to offer for sale one of Royston's earliest properties that we understand dates back to the late 15th Century. This delightful Grade II listed period property has been granted planning permission to be returned to a residential dwelling. The surprisingly deceptive accommodation includes a large cellar with historic double doors to street level. Fabulous lounge with picture window and raised bow window with bench seat. A wealth of exposed original beams including part of the original ''Jettied'' beams within the dining room, kitchen, shower room/WC. To the first floor a substantial area which could be re-designed to occupy 2 3 bedrooms. Gas central heating to radiators. South/West facing rear courtyard.
A Brief History Although a considerable amount of research has been undertaken it has not been possible to identify the exact date of construction. However, the historical records show that the group of houses at the top end of the High Street, including 59, were probably in existence in the late 15th/ early 16th century and it bears all the hallmarks of a typical period English oak timber framed building.
It's remarkable to think that who ever buys the property will have something which predates the crowning of Elizabeth I by over 60 years and the Spanish Armada by nearly 100 years and in that respect the purchaser becomes the 'guardian' of a piece of English history and this should be an absolute privilege.
It has continued as a residential property for most of its life until it was bought by the Shepherd family in the 1920's. Charlie Shepherd was a very well known character in the town and ran his barbers shop from the premises and there are current day Roystonians who remember sitting in the bay window area for their haircuts.
After Charlie died in the late sixties the premises appear to have been put to a variety of commercial uses and it was during this period that the property received a North Herts District Council Award for the renovation work undertaken in 1977.
The current owners, ABA Consulting, purchased the property in 1991 and have restored many of its original features which make it such a unique and magical property.
