HISTORICAL NOTES The Victoria Brick and Tile Co near Dartmouth Avenue was established in 1887 by Thomas May. A large Hoffman Kiln was installed which could produce 200,000 bricks in one firing. The Somerset and Dorset Railway line was connected to the railway by a siding known as May's Siding, after the firm's owner. The company was wound up in 1947 and the 230ft high chimney was demolished in 1950. The site of the large kiln is now covered with housing and the clay pits were filled in and are now public open space.
