About the Area
Dulcote is a pretty hamlet just one mile from Wells. Wells is the smallest city in England (population about 11,000) lying in beautiful countryside between the Somerset Levels and the Mendip Hills - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The major towns of the area being Bristol, Bath, Taunton and Yeovil are all within commuting distance. Castle Cary is the nearest train station with fast links to London. Wells has local markets twice a week and many medieval buildings including the Cathedral and moated Bishops Palace. There is a busy local shopping centre, a broad range of societies and activities and excellent State & Private schools in the area including Wells Blue School, Wells Cathedral School and Millfield School. The name of Dulcote has existed for at least one thousand years. One possible meaning for the name of Dulcote is that it derives from Dultingcote, meaning "cottages/ shelters" by the River Doulting (former name of River Sheppey). The name appears in an Anglo- Saxon charter, which transfers this land with other areas around Wells from King Edward the Confessor to the Bishop of Wells.

One of the many local landmarks is the glorious fountain found in the centre of this historic village and is nearly 150 years old. It has been created from the overflow from the springs which supplies water to the hamlet.
