Additional Information
The Higgs Yard was named in honour of the pharmacist Alfred Higgs of Richmond Road. Mr Higgs was the first 'commoner' to be elected as a Kingston magistrate, a position he held for 40 years. In 1893 the first Kingston phone book was launched and within it an advert for Mr Higgs Dispensing Pharmacy on Richmond Road.
Mr Higgs was one of the first residents to install a telephone room at his chemists shop, where customers could pay 2d (around 1 pence in today's money) for three minutes' talk time.
The shared courtyard space is draped with grapevines and other climbers. The inclusion of these particular plants is in recognition of a popular tonic produced by Alfred Higgs at this location using the grapes grown in the yard.
