THE HISTORY
From 1823, and under the influence of Dr George Birkbeck, the London Mechanics' Institute was founded to instruct the members in the arts, the sciences and other useful knowledge. From that beginning, many industrial towns had their own schools to educate the working classes and train skilled workers. By 1841, over 200 institutes had been established around the country. These also had a social aspect, emphasising sobriety and other virtues. They were essentially middle-class and did not always attract the working class at whom they were directed. The Stainland Mechanics Institute was one of these buildings, built in 1883 by the Shaw family, and opened in 1884. John Shaw was a mill owner from Holywell Green. who also build many homes and a church in the area for his workers. Author of black and white image unknown.
