The Properties & History
These much loved buildings are being carefully restored whilst retaining their important heritage and architectural integrity to provide 11 apartments and 4 cottages with allocated parking.
These charming buildings were built in 1885 to form a new Union Workhouse, replacing one on Shaftesbury Street that had been destroyed by fire. Built on a 4.5 acre site called Barton Fields on Bartons Road, these buildings were designed by Fred Bath of Salisbury in a simple Queen Anne style. In 1948 they became part of the new National Health Service as Fordingbridge Infirmary. Adjacent to these buildings is Fordingbridge Surgery, originally built as the classrooms for the workhouse children.
The striking clock in the tower was a gift from Sir Edward Hulse of Breamore House.
The 11 ground and first floor apartments have one or two bedrooms and some benefit from small private gardens. The four single storey two bedroom cottages also benefit from their own private gardens.
The internal specification includes: Period features, original refurbished and new wooden sash windows with brass furniture, oak laminate flooring in living/dining and kitchen, carpet to bedrooms, TV & telephone points in living and bedrooms, letter boxes in the main entrance hall, chain lock to front door and telephone entry system, solid wood internal doors with detailed mouldings and brass furniture, bathrooms/shower room with white sanitary ware, chrome fittings and heated town radiators together with fitted kitchens to include integrated fridge/freezer, dishwasher & washer dryer, electric fan oven, hob and extractor hood, oak or black stone effect worktops.
Externally beautifully landscaped private and communal gardens, traditional paths and courtyards, lighting, new gates and railings, allocated and visitor parking and the original telephone box will be restored.
