history
Planned and built under the supervision of The Royal Engineers, at a cost of around £52,000, the Victoria Barracks at Queensgate Road opened in 1878 as a regimental depot. On April 17th of this year a special train arrived with the first occupants: 103 men of all ranks, 19 women and 47 children, bringing with them some 13 tons of luggage. In 1914 the facility took on the additional duty of acting as a mobilisation centre as the 21st Battalions of the Regiment passed through the barracks. By 1920, the Regimental Museum was formed at the depot and in 1930 the building was extensively altered and modernised. On the outbreak of the Second World War, the Victoria Barracks made room for large intakes of reservists. Enemy bombs demolished part of the building in 1941 but the recruits had returned to the barracks by 1946. Fifteen years later, the depot was finally closed after 83 years.
